This large wall plaque or tray is an exceptional example of late 19th-century French Japonisme. Hand-carved from solid wood, the piece displays high-quality technical execution characteristic of the circle of Gabriel Viardot (1830-1906), renowned for integrating Oriental motifs into European cabinetmaking.

Historical Context: The central motif features a stylized bat holding Oriental coins (cash coins). In Asian iconography, the bat is a symbol of good fortune and happiness, while the coins represent prosperity. This design reflects the Art Nouveau era's fascination with East Asian art, adapted with the sensibility of French design of the period.

Technical Details:
- Period: Late 19th Century (circa 1880-1890).
- Technique: Direct carving with dynamic openwork.
- Dimensions: 52 cm long by 30 cm wide (20.5 x 11.8 inches).

- Condition: Excellent preservation for its age. A natural crack in the wood grain is observed, which does not compromise structural stability, evidencing its organic and original character.

Value: A piece of significant value for collectors of French cabinetmaking, enthusiasts of the Japonisme movement, or for interior decoration with Gothic and Oriental accents.
