Vintage Textiles

Vintage and antique textiles: bedspreads, linens and embroidery

This section brings together bedspreads and coverlets in jacquard or crochet, embroidered bed linen from France and Spain, Manila-style tablecloths, lace tablecloths, curtains, table runners with monograms, Richelieu embroidery and sets of handkerchiefs. The pieces date from the early 20th century to the 1970s and are described by fibre, size and condition.

How to read a textile listing

• Fibre: cotton, linen, silk and viscose behave differently. The listing names the material.
• Size: measurements are in centimetres. Compare them with your bed, table or window.
• Condition: stains, small holes, repairs and yellowing are described and photographed.
• Monograms and embroidery: initials are original to the piece and may not match your own.

Frequently asked questions

How should I wash an antique textile?

Gently and by hand, in cool water with a mild detergent, after testing a hidden area for colour fastness. Fragile silk, old lace and heavily embroidered pieces may be better dry cleaned or simply aired.

Are the sizes standard?

Not always. Old bed linen and bedspreads often follow older sizing, so check the measurements in centimetres rather than a standard name.
