SylvaC Shaving Scuttle. Traditional ceramic vessel for wet shaving, produced by the British manufacturer SylvaC (Shaw and Copestake) in Stoke-on-Trent.

Object History: Two-chamber scuttles were a technical innovation designed to maintain the temperature of the soap lather. Hot water is poured into the lower reservoir through the side spout, while heat is transferred by conduction to the perforated upper chamber where the soap resides. This specimen features detailed nautical iconography in black on white, representing the famous 19th-century clippers Flying Cloud and Sweepstakes.
