An exceptional pair of Victorian open-crotch drawers (pantaloons) dating to the late 19th century, preserved in pristine, unworn condition. Originating from a family trousseau, these garments represent the refined needlework of the era, complete with a hand-embroidered monogram 'M' inside a decorative cartouche on the front waistband.
Historically, drawers of this period were designed with an open (split) crotch to facilitate ease of use beneath multiple layers of petticoats and heavy skirts. Hand-embroidered monograms were a traditional mark of ownership and social standing, prepared years in advance for a young woman's bridal trousseau.
Features and details:
- Period: Late 19th Century (Victorian Era)
- Technique / Style: Handmade lace insertions, decorative pintucks, openwork embroidery, and hand-crocheted lace trim. Split crotch construction with a structured waist band, featuring a rear draw-tie closure with a soft fabric button-loop.
- Size: Waist: 82 cm (32.3 inches), corresponding to a modern Large to Extra Large (L-XL).
- Material: Fine antique white cotton-linen blend.
- Condition: Outstanding, unworn trousseau condition. The fabric remains crisp and unwashed, showing minor faint storage patina on the lace insertions which is typical for authentic antique textiles.
This piece represents significant archival value for costume historians, theater wardrobes, or advanced collectors of antique lace and historical lingerie. Its generous waist measurement makes it an exceptionally rare find among Victorian garments of this type.
