An antique 19th-century Spanish folding fan featuring a lithographed bullfighting scene ("Corrida de Toros") and a central theatrical Spanish genre composition. The scene depicts a traditional flamenco dancer, a Spanish guitarist, and a torero, framed by floral motifs. The guards and sticks are crafted of dark-painted wood decorated with gilded letters spelling out "LOS TOROS..." referring to the famous bullfights of Seville.
During the late 19th century, folding fans (abanicos) decorated with bullfighting themes and romanticized regional scenes were highly sought-after souvenirs for travelers visiting Spain, serving as both functional cooling instruments and commemorative keepsakes of Spanish cultural heritage.
Features and Details:
- Period: 19th Century (circa 1880-1890)
- Technique / Style: Chromolithography on paper leaf, hand-painted wooden sticks with gold accents
- Size: Guard length is 38 cm (14.96 inches), with an open span of approximately 70 cm (27.55 inches)
- Material: Wood, paper, brass loop
- Condition: Antique worn state, ideal for restoration projects or rustic display. The front lithographed leaf shows splitting along several fold lines and minor paper losses. The solid red paper backing shows heavier wear, tears, and old paper reinforcements. The wooden structure remains sound with expected paint loss to the guards.
This piece presents historical value for collectors of Spanish memorabilia, traditional graphic art, or as a atmospheric cabinet decor piece.
