This antique miniature horse-drawn carriage is an elegant example of late 19th-century Grand Tour style novelty art, inspired by the creations of the Parisian Palais Royal boutiques. Designed as a decorative trinket dish or open salt cellar, it combines the warm tones of cast metal with the natural luminescence of organic shell.
During the Gilded Age, travelers on the European Grand Tour acquired such objects of vertu as luxury souvenirs. The carriage served multiple functions, placed on writing desks to hold nibs or pins, or on dining tables as a master salt cellar.
