History of the object: Joseph Clementson (active 1839–1864) was a prominent earthenware manufacturer in Hanley. The "Siam" series is a paradigmatic example of Victorian taste for Oriental aesthetics, utilizing the transferware technique. The stamp on the reverse includes the phoenix emblem and a diamond registration mark dating the design specifically to April 1, 1860.
